La couleur des élytres de cet insecte explique l'étymologie de son nom qui vient du latin coccinus (« écarlate »). La famille des Coccinellidae a été créée par Pierre André Latreille (1762-1833) en 1807.
Dans le langage courant, on appelle aussi la coccinelle la « bête à bon Dieu » car elle est la meilleure amie des jardiniers et surtout, selon une légende remontant au Moyen Âge, parce qu'elle porterait bonheur.
Les anciens prédisaient du beau temps lorsque la coccinelle s'envolait.
